Bernie Christine Mathes was born on March 11, 1950 to two West Des Moines Educators, Rex and Bernadine Mathes. Bernie was an outstanding student and resourceful leader at Valley High School. She met her husband, Lincoln Gray at Carleton College, MN, received her MSW from Michigan State, working in several settings. Bernie last worked at the Harrisonburg, VA Free Clinic up to the day of diagnosis of a malignant brain tumor. Bernie was known for her compassionate people skills and deep love for her family, daughters Katherine and Emily and Lincoln. She was the epitome of grace as her life ended, ever grateful for her many blessings.

    What a wonder it was to be Bernie's friend -- throughout 6 months in Japan, back at Carleton junior and senior years, keeping in touch through various moves and through years of correspondence.
    She was such a blessing.
