Barrie Richardson was a great friend through our mutual love of magic, a field in which he had an outsized presence thanks to his creative gift for mystery performance. He authored three best-selling books for magicians, detailing his creations. I met him in around 1986 when I lectured in Shreveport, Louisiana to a group of magicians. He introduced himself afterward and the fact that we both attended Carleton (though he was graduated on very nearly the day I was born) formed an instant bond between us. He was a brilliant creator and performer of magic, though his professional career was as an academic. He was also a very generous person and much loved by his many friends around the world. He is missed!
