Barbara received a degree in English Literature from Carleton where she met her future husband Douglass. After Carleton, both enrolled in the Peace Corps and were sent to Nigeria. Their time in Nigeria was cut short by a civil war attempt to set up the Republic of Biafra.
After narrowly escaping the conflict, they flew out of Cameroon to Minneapolis. They moved to North Carolina where Barbara received her Master’s in Library Science at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
The Deweys later moved to Carrboro, North Carolina and lived there for over 40 years. Barbara was librarian at Frank Porter Graham Elementary School for more than 30 years.
Barbara and Doug spent their last years at Pettigrew Rehabilitation Center in Durham, North Carolina. Doug’s memorial was featured at our 55th reunion.
Barbara’s family and friends will always remember her sweet nature, her love of music, and her commitment to right the wrongs of our world.
