Ardis was born in Zumbrota, Minn., on Nov. 1, 1906, the daughter of Peter and Olga Swenson. They family moved to Northfield a few years later when Peter Swenson established a furniture and undertaking business on Division Street. Ardis graduated from Northfield High School in 1924 and from Carleton College in 1928.

In 1929 Ardis married Henry Wingate, also of Northfield, and also a Carleton College classmate. The Wingates subsequently moved to New York where Henry, a lawyer, eventually became chairman and C.E.O. of International Nickel of Canda, Ltd. While in New York, Arids was active in the Blue Hill Troupe from 1937 to 1954, singing lead soprano in many Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.

Ardis was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Stanley. She was the mother of two sons, Henry K. Wingate of Otis, Mass., and William P. Wingate of Sheboygan, Wis. She is also survived by several grandchildren and by her housekeeper of 45 years, Mary B. Clarke, who became her steadfast caregiver through 16 months of home Hospice care, and was also Ardis’ companion and friend.
