Dear Genevieve,

Today is December 8, 2019 a beautiful winter morning. As I walk on our Carleton campus, I am reminded of our long friendship. Since you were from Hong Kong and I from Turkey we immediately bonded our freshman year as kids who knew another culture well and missed our families very much. During our four years we roomed together and you became part of my Northfield Scott family, often visiting my grandparents farm on the edge of town where we spent numerous Thanksgivings, Christmases, and weekends together.

Seeing Goodhue, I am reminded of the many meals we shared in that beautiful dinning hall. Then further up the hill I see the Chapel and the ice rink on “The Bald Spot”. Remember the time we tried skating for the first time? We must have been a sight to behold with at least three pillows tied around our waists!

In retirement Don and I live only 2 blocks away from our dorm Watson Hall where you and I  shared the joys and challenges of our Junior and Senior years! You were a star of the Physics department, Gen! Recently we talked with two of your former Profs, Bruce Thomas and Richard Noer who both remember you so fondly.

You went on to get more degrees Gen and finally became a doctor, an endocrinologist and married John Hamm, a heart surgeon. We remember fondly our visits with you in Connecticut and later in Modesto, California where you were both practicing doctors.

Late in life you returned to Hong Kong to adopt a little girl, Olivia, who brought much joy into your lives. You watched her grow and enjoy soccer, and later golf. You had “movie nights” every Friday and even played some basketball with her on occasion. One of your favorite activities as a family was to hike numerous trails and visit Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, and Nevada and of course Disney Land! I remember a lovely photo of you three at Disney. I was so happy that you were enjoying being a mother, Gen.

How lucky that two years ago Don and I visited you in your beautiful home in San Ramon, CA. We got to meet Olivia, then 17 ,and saw what energy and joy she she brought into your lives. You were suffering the effects of a brain tumor  then and John had been dealing with early onset of some dementia. We saw how important Olivia’s new driving skills and her boundless energy was to you both.

Olivia is a freshman at St Olaf College and a star on the women’s golf team. We are so glad to help her out on occasion and host her in our home. The circle has come full around Gen!

I miss you Genevieve and am so thankful for the long and beautiful friendship we shared. We promise to check on your Olivia and hope to see her thrive and grow into a lovely smart woman like her mother. How we wish we could host you and John for our upcoming 50th Carleton reunion this June. Your spirit will be here with us that weekend as we honor you and your accomplishments.
