After graduating from Carleton with a biology major, Sue earned an Master’s degree and Candidate’s degree in botany from the University of Michigan.  She received a PhD in cytogenetics and genetics from the North Carolina State University’s Department of Crop Science.  She began her career as a high school biology teacher in Chappaqua NY.  Then for 27 years she was a member of the North Carolina Academy of Science, serving as executive secretary and office manager.

She volunteered for the Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity and Wake County Technical College; from 1984 to 1999 she was part of the Wake County Guardian Ad Litem Program.  She collected pottery and antique botanical prints.  Sue was an amateur photographer, cat lover, avid gardener and a faithful member of the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh.  She died May 25, 2012.
