Laurie Scher ’63

Class: 1963

Major: English

Residence: West Hollywood, CA

Deceased: December 5, 2021

Laurie E. Scher died on Dec. 5, 2021 in Los Angeles, where she lived for many years. At Carleton, where she transferred in after freshman year, she was one of 16 students who went to Washington, DC in November of our junior year for a fast and picket against the arms race and atomic bomb testing. After Carleton, she attended Boston University and received a Masters of Social Work in 1967. She subsequently lived and worked in Boston, St. Louis, and then Los Angeles. In addition to her sister and other family, she had many close loving and long-lasting friendships.

Her attitude of caring and nurturing both her clients and coworkers continued throughout her long social work career. She worked mostly in community settings including Catholic Social Services and over 20 years at Jewish Family Services in LA, where she worked primarily with seniors. After her death many friends and co-workers met for a bagels-and-cream-cheese-and-lox get-together celebrating her life. She was remembered for being a consummate professional, a dear friend, and a cat lover, not necessarily in that order. She was a loyal friend and always an empathic listener. Her wry sense of humor on life’s ups and downs even kept her doctors chuckling at life’s end. She will be missed by all whose paths crossed with hers.
