Sloan Childers attended Carleton for two years and then transferred to the University of Oklahoma where he received a degree in petroleum engineering in 1965. At Oklahoma he joined the Navy ROTC program. After his commissioning as an ensign, he received a Master’s degree and then served a tour of duty with the Navy. Following military service he built a career in New Orleans where he designed offshore oil platforms.
Childers died Dec. 4, 1991 and was survived by a wife and two sons.
