Joyce came to Carleton from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois. She graduated with a degree in Sociology. Following graduation, she went to the Netherlands to teach; she enjoyed learning about the country and traveling throughout Europe. She returned to study at the University of Chicago. At U. C. she met and married Charlie Fischer, a fellow Carl who had left the campus before Joyce’s arrival. They raised two children Carl and Jean. Joyce spent many years as a guidance counselor at Evanston Township High School. She was a lifetime educator and counselor with a special interest “in civil rights and more equal educational opportunities for all young people.”
She and Charlie retired early and spent 15 months living aboard a 33’ sailboat named Woodstock. They cruised the Great Lakes, Erie Canal, and East Coast and enjoyed meeting people from many countries who had also come to sail in the area. They returned to the Chicago area and Joyce rejoined ETHS on a part-time basis until fully retiring. She died in Northbrook, IL May 1, 2014.
