November 29, 1941 – May 5, 2015Judy Jochem was one of four Spanish majors in the Carleton class of 1964, the largest number in years. Spanish professor Antonio Obaid on graduation day remarked to the majors and their parents that 1964 marked the “Golden Age” of Carleton Spanish majors. Judy graduated from Ainsworth High School in Nebraska. At Carleton she earned Distinction in the Spanish Comprehensive Exams and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She also won a Fulbright Scholarship for a year of graduate study in Ecuador. She was a member of Glee Club and worked on the Algol staff.In the spring trimester of 1963, Judy participated in the Experiment-in-International-Living-Carleton-Study-Abroad Program in Spain. Spanish major Sue Cantrill Frow remembered Judy as “rather quiet.” Judy’s roommate during sophomore and junior years, Eva Reque Steege, observed that when Judy returned for senior year, “she was transformed by that experience [in Spain] from a rather shy, industrious, would-be—loner to a radiant extrovert, full of confidence and humor.” I was also a participant in the study abroad in Spain in the spring of 1963 and had the opportunity to travel with Judy. We became close traveling companions and benefited from sharing new experiences together. Although Judy did not attend any class reunions, she remained interested in Carleton and in news about Carleton students, especially their activities in music, according to long-time class volunteer.By Esther Musson JohnsonJudy married Alija B. Mujic; they had two children. In telephone conversations with class volunteers, Judy spoke with pride of her children. Her daughter, married with three children, is an attorney in California. Her son earned a Ph.D. in mycology and is a faculty member at California State University.
