Nels Christian Elde ’95 has carved a remarkable path in evolutionary genetics, significantly impacting our understanding of host-microbe interactions.

After graduating from Carleton in 1995, Elde pursued his passion for evolutionary biology, earning a PhD from the University of Chicago. His academic journey led him to a postdoctoral fellowship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, where he began his groundbreaking work on the evolution of viral sensors and host-pathogen interactions.

Currently, as a professor of human genetics at the University of Utah, Elde’s research delves into the dynamic evolution of infectious microbes like viruses and bacteria. His work is pivotal in understanding the complex interplay between hosts and pathogens, revealing how they continuously adapt and counteract each other in an evolutionary arms race.

Elde’s contributions to science are vast and varied. He is a distinguished Pew Scholar in Biomedical Sciences, a Kavli Foundation Fellow, a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Investigator, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, and a MacArthur Foundation Fellow. His extensive publication record, featuring more than 50 papers in prestigious scientific journals, underscores his significant impact on the field.

His research advances theoretical understanding; it has practical implications for medicine, particularly in developing strategies to combat viral and bacterial infections. For instance, his work on how poxviruses, including smallpox, evolve using mimicry to evade host immune responses has powerful implications for understanding the mechanisms of infectious disease transmission and opened new avenues for therapeutic interventions.

Beyond his research, Elde is committed to mentoring and educating future scientists. He engages with students at both the University of Utah and Carleton, where he returns to give lectures and mentor science majors. Additionally, he produces and hosts his podcast This Week in Evolution, sharing the stories of scientists whose work has yet to reach the general public, and personalizes these stories by discussing how the experiences of scientists shape their research. Elde’s career is a testament to his dedication to advancing scientific knowledge and educating future generations, embodying the values of scholarship and service.
