Through his award-winning work, Andrij Parekh ’94 has captured the soul, emotion, and humanity of indie and iconic television and film projects.

Parekh graduated from Carleton with a double major in sociology/anthropology and media studies and earned an MFA in film studies from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Parekh is known as a master of technical craft with an inherent understanding of storytelling, and his collaborative spirit and distinctive photography have made him a highly respected and in-demand cinematographer, director of photography, and director. His creative work includes 63 cinematography credits for films, including Half Nelson, Dark Horse, and The Zookeeper’s Wife; six director credits for television shows, including Watchmen and Succession; three producer credits; and 16 credits in other categories, such as editor, camera, and electrical. He was also the cinematographer on the pilot episodes for Succession, Scenes from a Marriage, and Watchmen, helping set the visual tone for these acclaimed shows.

In 2020, Parekh won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for directing “Hunting,” an episode of the HBO hit show Succession. In 2023, he was nominated for a second Emmy for directing another episode of Succession, “America Decides.” In addition to his Emmy nods, Parekh has won five other industry awards, including the 2002 Winner for Short Film–Best Cinematography in the Newport Beach Festival and the 2007 Winner for Best Cinematography in the Latvian National Film Festival. His films have played at the Cannes, Telluride, Toronto, Sundance, and New York Film Festivals. He has also received numerous nominations, including a 2010 nomination for Best Cinematography in the Film Independent Spirit Awards and a 2022 nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Series from the Directors Guild of America. In 2004, Variety also named him one of “Ten Cinematographers to Watch.”

Parekh lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife, Sophie Barthes, and daughter, Chloé Parekh.
