About the speaker
Louis Newman, the John M. and Elizabeth W. Musser Professor of Religious Studies, Emeritus, taught at Carleton from 1983 to 2016 and also served as the Director of the Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching and as Associate Dean of the College. After retiring from Carleton, he served until 2022 as the Dean of Academic Advising and Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Stanford University.
An internationally recognized scholar in the field of Jewish ethics, he is the author of Past Imperatives: Studies in the History and Theory of Jewish Ethics (1998), An Introduction to Jewish Ethics (2005), and Repentance: The Meaning and Practice of Teshuvah (2010) and co-editor of several other volumes. He has also authored dozens of articles for both scholarly and general audiences.
