The Importance of the Liberal Arts: a Conversation with Prof.  Baird Jarman on Thursday, April 17, 2025, 2:00 pm Central Time

Carleton is a champion of the best of liberal arts education. In an environment where questions about the value of the liberal arts persist, Carleton’s mission and legacy of exceptional education in the liberal arts can get lost in general debates about the relevance of higher education.

Baird Jarman, director of the Humanities Center, David and Marian Adams Bryn-Jones Distinguished Teaching Professor of the Humanities, and professor of art history, spoke about the ways the College emphasizes interdisciplinary studies, bridges STEM and the Humanities, and helps students see their majors less as silos of knowledge and more as hubs of activity. He also highlighted Carleton’s Career Pathways project, a tool to help students and their advisers explore and map potential career trajectories.

’75 First at Carleton: a conversation with Frank B. Kellogg Professor of Political Science Al Montero 4:00 pm Central Time January 28, 2025

First-generation college students have the same aspirations and goals as their legacy peers, yet without the right support and encouragement, they encounter barriers that can prevent them from fully experiencing all that Carleton has to offer on the path to graduation.  Al Montero, Frank B. Kellogg Professor of Political Science, former Dean of Advising, Past Posse Mentor, and first-generation student himself, spoke about what has been learned and what struggles remain as the college seeks to better serve first-generation students on campus.

Recording of Zoom conversation with Dina Zavala, Carleton’s Vice President for Inclusion, Equity, and Community, November 21, 2024:

The college’s long-term commitment to shoring up support for first-gen students is reflected in the newly created office of inclusion, equity, and community. Our class gift will help the college as it builds the scaffolding that ties together a number of initiatives, some that have been around for several years and others that are new, but all together still have a ways to go to meet the needs of the 16% of the student body that are first-gen students. In this installment, we learn about some of the organizational development. In subsequent installments we aim to feature faculty and student perspectives.
