2024 First Generation Grad Celebration
First generation celebration event 2024

Nationwide, first-generation students–those whose parents or guardians do not have a bachelor’s degree–comprise fifty-six percent of undergraduates. They are more likely to come from low-income or minority backgrounds and face greater academic and financial challenges than their continuing-generation peers. A recent Voice article (see sidebar) highlights some of these obstacles and what the Carleton community is doing to help.

Without access to support services, first-generation students typically graduate at less than half the rate of undergraduates who have at least one parent with a college degree. As one first-generation faculty member has observed, when first-generation students arrive at Carleton, many feel a deep sense of alienation and do not even know the questions to ask as they begin their college experience.

Carleton has adopted the strategic direction to enroll and graduate an increased number of first-generation students. In 2023, 15% of Carleton’s entering class self-identified as first-generation students. Existing programs like TRIO (a federally-funded initiative for low-income and first-generation students) are producing impressive results. This year, 88% of senior-year program participants will graduate with the class of 2024. Unfortunately, current levels of funding only support one-third of Carleton students eligible for enrollment in TRIO.

In recognition of this significant and growing need, Carleton has committed to creating First at Carleton, a first-generation student success program, to ensure that a Carleton education, so rich in opportunities, is accessible to talented students from all backgrounds. By rising to the challenge now, The Class of 1975 First at Carleton Endowed Fund will also serve as a catalyst for ongoing faculty, staff and alumni action toward this goal.

Our 50th Reunion Planning Committee is exceptionally grateful to classmates for their enthusiastic response to the committee challenge for the ’75 First at Carleton Fund. We are thrilled to announce that the $100,000 challenge match was fully claimed by the December 31 deadline! We are well on our way to our goal of endowing the ’75 First at Carleton Fund – if you haven’t yet joined us, please consider pledging or making a gift today!
