Navigating the Road to Reunion
When: June 13-16, 2024
Where: Carleton College Campus in Northfield, Minnesota
Accommodations: Class of ’74 will be housed in Watson Hall on a first-come-first-serve basis
Cost to Attend: $50 per adult for 50th Reunion alumni and spouse/guest for the full weekend

The 50th Reunion Program Committee has been busy developing a broad array of activities that will hopefully be of particular interest to our ‘74 classmates. Women’s Sports at Carleton, Part 3: The Era of Title IX

When I began this series of articles, I honestly didn’t know where it was going. I was curious about Carleton athletics when we were students and I was interested in the long view of progress since 1974. And, of course, I am interested in the current situation for women. I learned a lot. Much progress has been made at Carleton and throughout the country, though it’s troubling that fifty years later, there are still many challenges. When Title IX was passed in 1972, fewer than 300,000 girls played high school sports and 32,000 played in college. In the past five decades since then, participation in girls’ and women’s sports has exploded, with 3.4 million high school girls playing sports and 219,000 women playing in the NCAA. Today, women make up 44% of all NCAA student athletes.

In this interview with Dr. Harry Ward of the class of 1974, we discuss his career in academic medicine as well as his service as a Reserves Naval Officer in Afghanistan and Iraq. Harry’s experience at Carleton was unique. Coming from an inner city high school, he met new challenges and was rewarded with unusual opportunities. Pivotal to his pathway were the values his parents instilled from their own unique life choices. We talk about his decision to attend Carleton and the special relationships he developed with professors, advocates, the football team, and his Musser dormmates. After sophomore year, Harry left Carleton to attend medical school at Howard University, returning senior year to finish the requirements for his Carleton undergraduate degree.. Whether you met Harry in those early years or not, this is your chance to catch up with him and the many experiences he has had along the road since then.

Make Sure Your Own Story Is a Part of the Saga of ’74!

Well, yes and no.
Yes it is, in fact, too late to get into the printed version of the book. The deadline for the printed book was February 15th. That’s the bad news.
The good news is the digital version remains open to accept new bios and it will stay open up to—and beyond—the reunion in June.

Final Thoughts
That’s it from us for now. Over the past many months, as we’ve enjoyed our newsletters, the life stories shared in our bio book, and the varied informal interactions with classmates, we’ve been continually reminded of what an amazing group of people make up our class of 1974. We’re really looking forward to coming together in June to share experiences in person, get to know each other a little better, and just enjoy each other’s company. We’ll see you there!
