Class of ’73 Reunion Activities

3 May 2023

Wondering “What can I look forward to Reunion weekend?” You can:

  • Discuss Sherlock Holmes with the new Carleton President, Alison Byerly, after doing your Reading Homework (!):  Arthur Conan Doyle, “The Final Problem” (1893) and “A Study in Scarlet” (1887) Chapters 1 and 2. This is a terrific opportunity to meet and chat with our new president, who started her term in August 2021. She is also a Carleton parent and we hope to hear her perspective on what Carleton students are thinking these days.
  • Join a group discussion on the current challenges of Truth, Education, and Democracy. What impacts do misinformation, social media, truth, trust, and education have on a diverse democracy? Five Class of ’73 classmates will highlight the issues and provide us an hour of moderated discussion and collective thinking in this era of a polarized electorate.
  • Pecha Kucha (Japanese: chit-chat) is a storytelling format in which a presenter shows 20 slides for 20 seconds of commentary each.  Jeremy Iggers has found seven of your classmates who actually think they can do this.  You’ll have a chance to witness if this is possible on Saturday afternoon of Reunion Weekend. Examples: Cindy Bluhm will present “The Mating Habits of Mallards,” and Lou Wu will present “Breathless: Lessons from My Lung Transplant.”
  • Catch up on climate change and sustainability, with the panel “Decarbonizing Carleton and the Rest of Us.” The goal is to identify what we can do individually, communally, and globally to implement sustainable energy technologies for the 21st century. Jay Benziger, Class of ‘73 (Distinguished Achievement 2023), Roger E. Clark, Class of ‘73 (Distinguished Achievement 2003), and Sarah Fortner, Director of Sustainability at Carleton, will present technical, political, economic, and social challenges and potential solutions.
  • On a more somber note, take time to remember your classmates who have died over the past 50 years, at a Sunday Morning Memorial Program in the Japanese Garden at 8:45am. Through remembering them, we hopefully will find wholeness and connection.

And more …

  • Look for birds with George-Ann (Davis) Maxson (early) and Bob Williams (not as early).
  • Walk through the arb with old friends and new.
  • Meditate with Gyandev (Rich) McCord.
  • Meet old friends and make new ones in our tye-died lounge in Watson.
  • Sing along with Paul Stiegler on his guitar in our own tent behind Watson.
  • Play Rotblatt with the Class of ’78, using modified, age-appropriate rules, and a keg (and bring your own glove).
  • Chat with faculty who will join us for dinners in Great Hall and the Weitz Center.

And even more! With All-Class events and fun – something for everyone.

We look forward to seeing you there!
