Our 50th Reunion is a time for each one of us to celebrate our longstanding connections and commitment to each other and the College. In that context, our 50th Reunion Gift Committee has decided to direct a portion of our 50th Reunion class gift to support student career exploration and discernment opportunities and establish a Class of 1970 Endowed Internship. Together, we aspire to support a dozen student internships each year, in perpetuity!
We are excited about this designation for a number of reasons:
- Internships are an essential part of a Carleton education, a way to gain valuable experience, explore career aspirations, and connect academics with the real world. They are also a top priority of the Every Carl for Carleton Campaign.
- Internships are considered to be an extension of financial aid. College funding allows students to pursue unpaid internship opportunities and evens the playing field for those who might not otherwise be able to do so. A third of the 2018 graduates who responded to the Career Center’s Senior Survey indicated that they had to give up non-paying research or internship opportunities due to financial concerns.
- We were also motivated by a generous 2020 Internship Match program, a combined gift from classmates Wally and Barb Weitz and their family, as well as Bill Buffett ’55 and Susan Kennedy. The match doubles the impact of gifts to our 50th Reunion class fund, matching gifts dollar-for-dollar up to $500,000. Combined with the matching funds, that translates to a $1 million endowment that would fund at least 10-12 student internships each year, in perpetuity.
