The Trip

I invite you to join Fred Hagstrom, Rae Schupack Nathan Professor of Art, Emeritus, on this very special exploration of New Zealand. Travel during the austral summer, with average daytime temperatures in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit. With Professor Hagstrom we will delve into history, culture, and art as we explore the natural landscapes of both North and South Islands.
Professor Hagstrom was instrumental in custom-designing this itinerary based on his longstanding interest in New Zealand, which he first visited in 1995. He then brought groups of 25 Carleton students to New Zealand, Australia, and the Cook Islands every other year from 1996 to 2019. They studied art, printmaking, the natural and cultural environment, the legacy of colonialism, South Pacific history, and the art and culture of indigenous people.
On this comprehensive, 16-night alumni tour we will see spectacular landscapes of fiords, volcanoes, lakes, and an illuminated glowworm grotto. Enjoy boat rides, flights, and hikes of varying lengths along trails within some of the country’s outstanding parks. Meet and learn about the indigenous Māori. Savor gourmet food and tastings of New Zealand’s celebrated wines. For anyone who has an interest in drawing, Professor Hagstrom could plan for some instruction, time-permitting.
This program is limited to a maximum of 18 participants plus Professor Hagstrom, who is assisted by an expert tour manager and local guides.
The waiting list is open for this tour, I encourage you to contact the Alumni Adventures office at (800) 811-7244 or carleton@studytours.org to add your name to the list.

Carleton Leader

Fred Hagstrom retired as the Rae Schupack Nathan Professor of Art in 2022, after teaching studio art at Carleton since 1984. His work is in printmaking, drawing, and book arts. From 1996 to 2019 Fred led a bi-annual, off-campus trip to the Cook Islands, New Zealand, and Australia. The trip allowed more than 300 total students to go to the South Pacific, studying drawing, printmaking, and the history and nature of these three countries. The trip included a focus on the history and cultures of indigenous people in each location. This will be Fred’s first trip with alumni, but it will build on his previous experience in leading trips to this beautiful part of the world. Much of his artwork is based on historical events and social issues, such as the incarceration of people of Japanese descent during the Second World War, and the effects of radiation tests on Pacific Islanders. Fred spends a good deal of time hiking and enjoying the outdoors. This New Zealand trip is a chance to share his interests in art and nature with Carleton alumni.
