The Trip
Join Yansi Pérez, Carleton Professor of Spanish, and fellow Carls for an unforgettable week exploring the historical and contemporary art scene in México City. We begin with a journey through time at the National Museum of Anthropology, visiting its most important pieces. On this trip, we also enjoy a guided walking tour of México City’s historic center and take a ride on the peaceful waters of the Xochimilco Canals, built by the Aztecs.
A trip to México City would not be complete without a private visit to Frida Kahlo Casa Azul Museum, a blue house where Frida Kahlo was born, and a visit to Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo House Studio Museum, an avant-garde building designed by Mexican architect and painter Juan O’Gorman. We will also spend some time visiting local art galleries, gaining a deeper understanding of the city’s vibrant and diverse art scene, which combines traditional and contemporary art.
Along with viewing all of the exquisite art, we will experience México City’s culinary scene with meals at Filigrana, run by a Mexican chef who loves to tell stories through her recipes; Restaurante Azulísimo, run by chef Ricardo Muñoz Zurita, who is considered one of Latin America’s top chefs; the Michelin-recognized Limosneros; as well as traditional restaurants. There will be time to explore the food and art scene on our own, too, with a few of our evenings at leisure. We will stay at a five-star hotel in the heart of the Polanco neighborhood, which is perfect for exploring in the evenings.

Yansi Pérez is a Salvadoran-born scholar of Latin American literature and culture whose work explores memory, migration, violence, and the cultural production of Central America and its diasporas. She is Professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies at Carleton College, where she has taught since 2009. Her research examines the intersections of literature, history, and collective memory, with particular attention to postwar Central America and the experiences of Central American communities in the United States.
Pérez has written extensively on the life and work of the Salvadoran poet and revolutionary Roque Dalton, exploring the complex relationships among poetry, politics, exile, and memory. Through her study of Dalton’s work, she developed a deep interest in the intellectual and cultural history of Mexico City, a place whose literary traditions, artistic vitality, and urban energy continue to inspire her scholarship. She is the author of Más allá del duelo: Otras formas de imaginar, sentir y pensar la memoria en Centroamérica (2019), and has published widely on contemporary Latin American literature and culture.
