The Trip

Join Carleton Professor Tun Myint for an illuminating exploration of the history, cultures, and landscapes of tropical Indochina. This Carleton-exclusive journey combines two nights in dynamic Ho Chi Minh City with a seven-night voyage aboard the elegant Mekong Princess, whose intimate size allows us to experience the Mekong River’s communities, traditions, and natural beauty at close range. Throughout the program, Professor Myint will provide lectures and insights that enrich our understanding, while expert local guides lead thoughtfully curated excursions. The journey concludes with three nights in Siem Reap, where we delve into the extraordinary Khmer temples of Angkor. An optional pre-trip extension to Hanoi and Ha Long Bay is available.

Carleton Leader

Tun Myint is a Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Carleton College.He directs Carleton’s Political Ecology and Economy of Southeast Asia Off-Campus Study program.Professor Myint also has field research sites in Burma, Thailand, and Lao PDR, investigating how knowledge systems shape local social ecological changes in Southeast Asia. He earned his PhD in 2005 from the joint program of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the School of Law at Indiana University, Bloomington. Professor Myint was a postdoctoral research fellow at The Vincent and Elinor Ostrom Workshop in political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University, teaching and engaging in research on democracy and environmental governance with a regional focus on Southeast Asia.

His research examines the role of individuals and groups in the dynamic relationship between social changes and global environmental changes with the focus on democracy, development, globalization, and sustainability.Professor Myint is the author of Governing International Rivers: Polycentric Politics in the Mekong and the Rhine. He served as a member of the Technical Advisory Team of the Federal Constitution Drafting Coordinating Committee of the Union of Burma from 2000 to 2005, and is a co-founder and board President of the Mutual Aid Myanmar to support Civil Disobedience Movement in Myanmar. Professor Myint cofounded the Independent Journal of Burmese Scholarship (IJBS) and serves as a member of the editorial board of the IJBS.

OPTIONAL PRE-TOUR EXTENSION IN Hanoi & Ha Long Bay (Dec. 4-8, 2026)

Begin your journey with two nights in Hanoi, including a city tour featuring the Temple of Literature, Hoan Kiem Lake, the “Hanoi Hilton,” Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum and stilt house, and a cyclo ride through the Old Quarter, followed by a traditional water puppet performance. Then travel to Ha Long Bay for an overnight cruise aboard the Paradise Elegance, featuring a visit to a pearl farm or kayaking, afternoon tea, a Vietnamese cooking demonstration, and a stop at Ti Top Island. Conclude with a morning visit to Me Cung Cave before flying to Ho Chi Minh City
