Glimpses of a Life in the Arts
With Shanta Nurullah (nee Velma Neal ’71)

Shanta Nurullah

Shanta Nurullah has told stories in China, played mbiras in Cuba, formed her own record label, advocated for women in music, jazzed up the sitar and serenaded babies in Chicago. Through personal stories, music, audio and video clips, she will share highlights from her long and varied career as a performer, bandleader and teaching artist.

Some of us, who once dreamed of a life in the arts, did not stay on the path, which is rarely straight and never easy. Join Shanta as she ponders issues of success, purpose, and fulfillment  arising on her unusual journey.

“I was truly blown away with the amount of work and creativity that went into last night’s concert. I think more than anything we honored the forgotten folks that gave so much to the struggle and on whose shoulders we gained so many freedoms.”
