Grimké Lecture - A Black Abolitionist Vision for Higher Learning

Wed, May 12, 2021 • 4:30pm • Zoom (link in description below)
How did Black abolitionists engage the meaning of higher learning at a time when American colleges were financially and intellectually tied to the political economy of Atlantic slavery? This presentation will focus on Black abolitionist thought on higher learning and its implications in the western, eurocentric colleges of the antebellum U.S. Using Black abolitionist writings and records of their organizations, the paper demonstrates that the meaning of higher learning was contested as it developed in the U.S. and that Black abolitionists conceptualized the purpose of higher learning as facilitating the creation of an interracial democracy.
