We are very excited to have you considering Carleton. Given how our lives have been disrupted by the global pandemic, I suspect you are looking forward to some sense of normalcy in the upcoming months. At Carleton, we want the same thing, and we are all working hard to determine how that might happen.
We are currently near the midpoint of Spring Term with all of our courses being offered online. Although this doesn’t represent our typical approach to teaching and learning at Carleton, with the need for social distancing, our faculty meticulously converted their courses to be offered through remote learning. And, as you would expect of Carleton faculty, they did not compromise the academic quality and integrity of their courses for our students.
Over the next few weeks, the senior leadership of the College, in collaboration with College committees represented by students, faculty, and staff, will consider scenarios and determine the best possible path forward. With any decision about the academic year, our main priorities will be the quality of the academic experience, and the health and safety of our community.
I can attest to you that my colleagues are working diligently to develop a creative solution for us to start the academic year as a community on campus. We understand that for all students—whether you are a new, incoming first-year or a returning student—being at Carleton would be ideal. I agree. Nonetheless, we have to consider the possibility that orders from the state of Minnesota or guidance from health experts will advise otherwise.
Even as our students are spread across the globe, their connection to Carleton remains absolutely strong. Carleton means so much to all of us. I hope you might find the same bond with Carleton as a new student.
If you accept our offer of admission, we will be sure to communicate with you as we learn more about the College’s plan for the fall and the academic year. Until then, trust that we are thoughtfully considering the start of your college experience and your place at Carleton.
