Activities to Arrange Through Admissions

Here are some options to consider before you schedule your visit.

Campus Tours (~1 hour)

A student-led campus tour will introduce you to Carleton’s programs and traditions. It will show you Carleton’s facilities and grounds, including the library, academic and social buildings, student residences, and athletic and recreational facilities. We hope you’ll ask questions! You’re also encouraged to walk around on your own and to visit downtown Northfield, just a few blocks from campus.

Group Information Sessions (~1 hour)

These sessions give you an introduction to Carleton’s academic programs, student life, and admissions process. You’ll have plenty of time to ask questions, too. These sessions are typically led by an admissions officer.

Interviews (~1 hour)

An interview with an admissions staff member is not required at Carleton, but we encourage it for high school seniors and transfer students. It’s an opportunity for us to get to know you as much as it’s an opportunity for you to learn more about the College. It’s a mutual exchange of information, not an interrogation. We do not require an interview and are only able to interview high school seniors until January 15 of their senior year. Transfer students can interview with us through February 15. Don’t panic if you missed the deadline – there are plenty of students who come to Carleton without having an admissions interview.

NOTE: If you cannot come to campus to interview, we invite you to meet with a Carleton alumnus/a who has been trained to do interviews in your area. These alumni interviews can be scheduled between September 1 and January 15 of your senior year of high school. Please contact us to get more information about setting up an alumni interview.

Classes (70–105 minutes)

Experience the challenge and intellectual excitement of Carleton’s academic life by attending a class that interests you. Classes are held Monday through Friday. Class selection for visiting is best on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Classes last 70 minutes (on Fridays they are shortened to 60 minutes to allow for the weekly convocation). The school day begins at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday, classes begin at 8:15 a.m. and last 105 minutes (hence, the preference for Mon., Wed. and Fri. classes by visitors).

Please have a few subject areas in mind before registering and we will make every effort to accommodate your requests. Due to space limitations, class visits are reserved for prospective students only (no parents or siblings).

Overnight Stays

Learn what it’s really like to be a student here by staying overnight with a Carleton student in a residence hall. Although all students are welcome to visit to campus, only high school seniors are allowed to stay overnight with an Admissions host. These stays are available only when Carleton is in session, and in the spring, are limited to admitted students. To accommodate as many visitors as possible, we can arrange for you to stay in a residence hall for one night only.

Trying to figure out when to visit?

To help us create a meaningful visit for you, we ask that you arrange your visit at least two weeks in advance. We generally publish our visit calendar 60 days in advance.
