Week 6 of Winter

Jelilat's sixth week illustrates Carls' commitment to student activism.

Monday Mid-Term Break for the win! I spent most of the day making finishing touches on my annotated demands for my Black Revolution on Campus. Shortly thereafter, I attended a meeting for #CarlsTalkBack, a student movement advocating for changes Carls want to see on campus. We drafted demands and made arrangements for a demonstration at the upcoming Friday’s convocation, at which former-white supremacist Arno Michaelis would be speaking and the Board of Trustees would be present.

It was really a sight to see students coming together to demand and work toward change that will ultimately enrich the experiences of all who attend this College. (And as a plus, homework was actually relevant to real-life, go figure.)

Tuesday Partially anxious about my future for this upcoming summer, I made my way down to the Career Center. There, I spoke with a student career helper, who showed me the many resources I could use to find an internship in the liberal arts sector. It was really helpful! I would recommend.

After my last class of the day, I headed to TRIO house for the tax workshop being held there. I got my burning questions about taxes answered.

Wednesday I started my watercolor class today! In addition to my other classes, I will be taking a five-week long course on the art of watercolor. *jazz hands* Currently, we are working with still-life fruit and vegetables.

Following watercolor, I completed my shift at the Writing Center as an office assistant. After a quick dinner and some brief homework, I attended Arabic Night with my Arabic peers. There, we skyped with two international graduate students from Bahrain and Lebanon who are currently attending American institutions. They shared their experiences in the U.S. and shared information about their countries.

Thursday This day was a bur! However, I know it went well since I managed to get some water-coloring in.

In the evening, I listened to the platforms of the candidates running for Carleton Student Association positions. Later in the evening, I voted for my choices for CSA representatives.

Friday I participated in the #CarlsTalkBack demonstration during that day’s convocation. It was a really powerful hour. Meanwhile, Carls were also in Sayles furthering the message of #CarlsTalkBack!

After convo, I hurried over to work at the library. There, I had interesting conversations about the demonstration and the convocation speaker.

From there, I headed to TRIO house to meet with my academic advisor. We made progress and set up my advising meeting for Spring Term. Still on my war path, I scurried over to the Weitz Center for Creativity to get my creativity on! I continued to work on my watercolor fruits and veggies under the guise of my instructor.

In the evening, I relaxed, stopped by TRIO house to get in on the snacks provided for movie night, and then retired to my bed.

Saturday I met with my assigned group to work on our in-class presentation on February 13, a significant day in the Black Campus Movements of the late 60s and early 70s.

In the afternoon, I spent some time at the Weitz helping my roommate make a video for other international students looking to study at American institutions. I also did some water-coloring.

Read attentively because this is where things get really good. For dinner, I had food, but then I had chocolate ice cream with edge-piece chocolate lava cake madness, all topped with coconut shavings. I know. A mouthful. An experience.

Sunday I did my laundry. After brunch, I got some work done. More water-coloring happened. I Also rested, and tried to enjoy the remainder of my weekend.

And as always…

All the best,
Jelilat

As a selectively-proud Houstonian, Jelilat is undecided in her major, and could be more concerned about her life after college. Meh. She’ll get there. She enjoys thriller novels, compulsive online shopping, and skipping the “It” movie advertisements when they come on. Jelilat also enjoys taking #OutfitofTheDay pics, spending time with people with very loud laughs, and learning more about her fellow peers’ experiences, interests, and perspectives.
