Tornado? More Like TornaNO
Bad luck? Never heard of her. Kamala continues to enjoy her time at Carleton in the face of a tornado and sprained ankle.

Continuing my streak of bad luck, on the last day of classes I was coming back from Weitz and tripped and fell down the stairs, tearing a ligament in my foot in the process. Just when I thought I could make it through the first week of classes unscathed! So, this week has been like the evolution of man. First I had crutches, then a boot, and now I am finally back on my feet and wobbling to classes. To celebrate my first day without crutches or a boot, we had a tornado warning!
I was eating dinner at the LDC when Campus Services sent the warning about the tornado and no one budged. Instead, I heard a person sitting behind me state nonchalantly, “This is my last meal and I am eating” and he continued to do so.
Despite all of my unfortunate luck, I have been having a great time in my classes! In my A&I class, Epic Films in World Culture, we have been having discussions about Pan’s Labyrinth and Clash of the Titans which have proved quite fascinating. We spent last class organizing a thesis statement around a topic in Pan’s Labyrinth as a group. My group and I covered fate and the illusion of free will in the film and even made a messy diagram illustrating our points!
In my downtime, I just started Season 3 of Insecure! For those of you who do not know what Insecure is, it’s a show on HBO primarily focusing on Issa Dee’s (played by Issa Rae) life as a 29-year-old black woman working at We Got Y’all, a nonprofit youth-outreach organization focused on providing educational resources to marginalized students. Issa deals with racist coworkers as well as relationship and friendship troubles on the show, all in a honest, relatable way.
Every shot in Insecure is captivating, not just because the characters and set design are dazzling, but also because the dark-skinned actors and actresses are properly lit, thanks to cinematographer and Insecure’s director of photography Ava Berkofsky. Ava was brought onto the crew for the show’s second season and revolutionized cinematic lighting for brown and black skin. Okay, I geeked out a little bit, but seriously I 10/10 recommend this show.
Now that you’re done reading this, go watch Insecure!
