Intro to Sculpture: Welding
This week was super hectic, but fun! The highlight of the week was my Intro to Sculpture class. We learned how to cut metal with a torch and weld pieces of metal together. When we got to learning how to weld, I put on a welding helmet that was dirty and I couldn’t see what I was doing. I thought that it was just me not being able to weld properly, but turns out I was actually welding blind because of the helmet, so that was fun!

I have been working on a presentation for Intro to Sculpture too! My presentation is on Lucy Orta. Lucy is an artist whose work operates on a plane where ethics and aesthetics interact and overlap. She makes sculptures and articles of clothing that appear functional or actually are functional as social commentary on the elitist nature of the art world.
She makes tents, connector villages and sleeping bags for people experiencing homelessness and refugees. Her work can be worn as a means of protest and demands to be seen. During Paris Fashion Week, she dressed all of the homeless people around the Louvre in her pieces to protest the elitism within the fashion community.
It has been really interesting to research Lucy’s work and inspirations and find ways to incorporate her philosophy of social activism and art in my own work. My last sculpture was an interpretation of the Sufi concept of dyads and duality. I really enjoy Intro to Sculpture because it makes me think more deeply about the things I have learned in other classes and see them in a different way. Trying to articulate complicated intellectual or philosophical concepts through art has been truly eye opening.
