Sergio’s Sunny Outlook on Spring!
The temperatures may still be a bit chilly, but Sergio's got spring on his mind!

Hey lovelies,
I recently returned from my spring break to an energetic campus filled with sunlight, students in shorts and tanks, blooming trees. The snow and iciness that defined Carleton over the past 11 weeks is history as spring term has arrived. Just the other day, several friends and I lounged on the Bald Spot and basked in the first sunny Northfield day in months. I was finally reunited with buddies who returned from winter study abroad, and unfortunately said goodbye to those going abroad this term. Overall, the rush of new seasons, new faces, and new classes has left me in a whirlwind of excitement.
This term I am registered for Intro to Women’s & Gender Studies, Democracy and Dictatorship, and Intermediate Spanish. As a potential Women’s & Gender Studies concentrator (Carleton’s equivalent of a minor), I am thrilled to be exploring various texts and films that encompass gender theory and intersectional feminism. We will be reading Alison Bechdel’s “Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic” which is a coming-of-age graphic novel about queerness within families. We are also watching “Paris is Burning,” a film that changed my life and the ways in which I perceive gender expression, community bonding, and urban spaces.
I’m super excited as well to be heavily involved with two different dance groups at Carleton! A fellow senior friend and I are choreographing a Beyoncé classic, “Rocket”, for Synchrony II. It’s a Carleton tradition to participate in the Synchrony II dance group at least once over your four years. I am also dancing for the Experimental Dance Board for my second time. This dance is drag-inspired, staccato, and reminiscent of fashion runways. In both dances I aspire to subvert gender norms and truly express my confidence and comfort with my body.
All in all, spring term is going to be such an explorative and wonderful time for me. Now let me catch some sun, and make sure you do too!
Stay cute,
Sergio Demara
Sergio hails from Tucson, Arizona, a land where everyone adopts several cacti for pets, and eggs are fried to perfection on sidewalks from consistent 100+° F temperatures. That said, his interests include rock climbing, foreign films, and vegan/vegetarian cooking (and is always looking for treats in his mailbox). He is a potential Cinema & Media Studies or Political Science major who hopes to spread equality & activism through mixed media. Read on to meet the rest of our bloggers.
