Just like approximately 300 fellow Carleton students, myself and a friend of mine host a show on our student-run radio station: KRLX. We have had 4 shows at this point, all of which have had titles from the famed Bad Lip Reading of High School Musical from Disney XD (for those who are familiar, our first show was “chorky” and our most recent one was named “cool hallway stance”). In honor of these amazing, entertaining, and of course highly viewed shows (we have an average of 3 listeners per show. I know, we’re popular), I will be ranking our top 5 music themes. This will not include our talking themes because that would be too long of a list and there is no way that I would be able to rank them.

#5: 90s/2000s Songs

Starting off strong, both my co-host and I love some good throwback songs, and what better time to enjoy them than during our 3am show? Also yes, KRLX runs 24/7 throughout the term. Yes, we were freshmen. Yes, we had to pay our dues. Honestly though, it was one of our most fond memories. Waking up at 2:45am to walk over to the radio station when the stars are out and campus is quiet and then getting to go back to sleep at 4:15am made for some really good memories.

#4: Entirely Summer Walker

This was the day her newest EP: CLEAR 2: SOFT LIFE came out, and because I was really tired, I missed its midnight drop.  Luckily for me, my co-host decided to not wake up and join me for this show (she was very eepy and to be fair it was a 5am Sunday slot), thus giving me free range of music selection. Naturally, I took this opportunity to listen to the new EP in the studio: music blasting, LED lights (purple of course) on, one (1) listener present according to the monitor, and spinning around in the comfy desk chair. Let’s just say it was an ethereal experience.

#3: Disney Soundtracks

This was a really fun show where we played all different types of Disney soundtracks. Our most played was from Hercules, Aladdin, and naturally, Rio (for those movie enthusiasts that are yelling “BUT THATS 20TH CENTURY FOX NOT DISNEY,” it was produced by Blue Sky Studios, now a subsidiary of Disney. So technically, it counts). We also were not within safe harbor hours (10pm to 6am) where we are allowed to play explicit music, and neither of us felt like talking. Having quiet Disney movie soundtrack listening time in the studio was awesome.

#2: 70’s on 7th week/80’s on 8th week/90’s on 9th week Series

This was a really fun series that my co-host and I came up with, though I’m sure we are far from being the first. For those that don’t know, Carleton runs on a trimester system made up of three terms, each being 10 weeks long. As we were approaching the 6th week of the term, we thought it would be a brilliant idea to coordinate some decades of music to the last few weeks of the term. With both of us having very different tastes in music, we created a few blended playlists that got us our highest listener count: 18!

#1: Sound Effects

It is exactly what it sounds like. We thought that playing an hour’s worth of purely sound effects would be really funny. According to friends and parents that tuned in during that time, it was indeed really funny. Apparently chainsaw noises for 1 minute straight immediately followed by the Clash Royale intro can get a laugh out of people, who knew?

Katelyn (she/her) is a junior at Carleton from Las Vegas, Nevada and a psychology major with minors in cognitive science and german. She is a proud first generation student who loves to participate in all things happening around campus. She is involved with Carleton’s student-run first-gen organization 1GenKRLX, and babyteeth. When she is not in the gym playing volleyball or lifting (super heavy) weights, she can be found hanging out with her friends or in the small park next to the Weitz, specifically on the east-most swing.
