Northfield and New York
More summer updates!
More summer updates!
Wow! What an eventful couple of weeks it has been — this summer is truly flying by. This post is going to be a jumbled combination of a bunch of different things including some details on a potluck, my trip to New York, and some book/show/music recommendations!
One of my favorite summer activities has been having potlucks with friends. I really love communal dinners, but sometimes cooking in big groups is logistically complicated, so potlucks are a very fun alternative! The first weekend in August Chris hosted a giant potluck at his apartment for anyone staying in Northfield over the summer! He made kimchi pork dumplings, spring rolls, fried rice, kale salad, a cheese board — it was amazing! And people brought kale chips, a caprese salad, homemade fries, blueberry custard pie, arroz con leche, toasted ciabatta bread, fruit salad, I could go on and on. The food was amazing! I decided to make sangria (my favorite summer drink) — the best part is getting to eat all of the fruit once it’s gone :). The whole night was so fun, and it was great to talk to a new group of people, since so many summer folk ended up coming! We also played fish bowl, which is a combination of taboo, charades, and some other stuff, which was a huge success! Chris is such a magnificent host, and really made it a special evening! I also got to go back the next night for sooo many delicious leftovers.
On a different note, last weekend I went to New York! Most of my friends from Carleton are in New York for the summer, so I went to visit! It also happened to be one of their birthdays! It was a great weekend filled with so much Carleton, despite the geographic distance. I got to see my best friends, and also saw some Carleton grads who came to celebrate the birthday! When I got to New York I met Nicki (see blog from a few weeks ago) at her office for an office party and met all of her coworkers. She is working at a production company over the summer doing development work; she researches potential ideas for new and existing shows, specifically focused on documentary/nonfiction shows. It was very cool to see her office and put faces to all of the names I had heard so much about. From there we met some of our other friends and had a little picnic! Other weekend activities included walking around the city, going to happy hour, eating lots of pizza, and just catching up with friends! The weekend went by very quickly, but it was so good to see everyone, and made me very excited about them all returning to Carleton in just a few short weeks! (However, this trip did mean that I missed Sunday trivia so sadly there are no questions in this weeks blog).
Some other events of the last couple weeks have been going to the lake (shocking), playing more poker (but this time we brought the poker set to The Cow for a change of scenery), checking out the Vintage Band Festival in Northfield, and going to the Minneapolis Art Festival.
On a different note here are some of the books/shows/music I have been into this summer!
Books: Full disclosure, I have not been reading as much as I’d like to this summer. But, I read Everything I Never Told You and Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng, and am currently working on White Noise by Don DeLillo. I would recommend them all!
TV Shows: My two favorite shows this summer have been Barry, and Crashing. Barry is the story of a hit man (Bill Hader) who moves to L.A and decides to pursue acting, and Crashing is a fictional show by Pete Holmes (refer to my bio) that is centered around his life as a stand up comic in New York. I also started watching How to Get Away with Murder, but honestly after season one the show got a little bit too far-fetched for me.
Music: Night Shift by Lucy Dacus, Until We Get There by Lucius, Crumble by Kevin Abstract, and Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac have been some of the songs I have been listening to on repeat this summer (among many others).
Ellie is senior American Studies major with a minor in Educational Studies, from Princeton, New Jersey. In her free time, she enjoys watching videos of Pete Holmes, going for long walks, playing trivia, and hanging with her cats. On campus, Ellie spends most of her time in the Weitz, where she works for the music department and sings in both the Carleton choir and chamber choir.
