As the temperature drops and the crispness of winter creeps in, I find myself reflecting on my upcoming winter break. Though winter hasn’t officially arrived yet, the chill in the air is a reminder that it’s just around the corner. As an international student, this winter promises to be a unique experience, and I want to share my plans to make the most of it.

Embracing the Cold

First and foremost, I have to admit that I’m a bit anxious about the cold. The thought of staying on campus during winter break is both exciting and daunting. I plan to hold on to every bit of warmth I can muster, reminding myself that winter is just a season and it won’t last forever. I’ve heard that embracing the cold can be quite liberating, so who knows? Maybe I’ll even come to enjoy the beauty of a winter wonderland!

Stocking Up

One of my biggest concerns during this break is food. With campus dining services taking a much-needed break, I know I need to be resourceful. Fortunately, I’ve signed up to use the Carleton Cupboard, which will provide me with essential food supplies. I’m grateful for this service, as it will help me stock up on the basics I need to survive. I’ve missed Ghanaian dishes, and this will be a great opportunity to experiment with new recipes using the ingredients I gather to make something similar to things from home. Who knows? I might end up with some great winter comfort food!

Staying Productive

Another aspect of my winter break plans is work. I believe that keeping busy is essential, especially during this time when loneliness can lead to overthinking. I’m excited that I’ve managed to secured a position with Carleton ITS! I’m looking forward to gaining valuable experience, meeting new people, and staying engaged over the break.

In addition to my job, I hope to volunteer and assist a staff member with research. I’m open to exploring any field, as my main goal is to contribute and learn something new. I believe that staying active and involved will help me make the most of my time on campus.

Looking Ahead

These are my plans for winter break, and while they may seem simple, I believe they will help me navigate this winter season with purpose. From embracing the cold to finding food and staying productive, I’m determined to make this break meaningful.

As I prepare for winter with all the anxiety, I remind myself that it’s just a chapter in my journey. I look forward to sharing my experiences and hopefully inspiring others to find joy and purpose during this season. Here’s to a productive and warm winter break!

Agnes (she/her) comes from Ghana. While it might seem like a faraway land, the strong sense of community, the incredibly kind people, and the enormous number of trees at Carleton make her feel at home. Her love for science stems from her fascination with nature, as science finds an interesting way to explain the natural world. She is a member of the FOCUS Program.  When she’s not writing, dancing, or singing behind closed doors, you can probably find her engaged in conversation somewhere. She likes to spend time researching medical school and life beyond; that should tell you about her great interest in pre-med. While she continues to explore her interests, she has discovered a great interest for BiologyChemistry, and CAMS classes at Carleton
