As we hit the midpoint of our trimester, many of us at Carleton are busy with our midterm essays, tests and projects. Yet, we always find time to balance, and add some fun into our schedules. My friend, Tex, (a nickname we gave because, well, he is from Houston, Texas), had his birthday a couple of days ago, so it gave us a fantastic reason to celebrate and have fun. With the Minnesota Twins playing Tex’s hometown Houston Astros in the MLB playoffs yesterday, we had the perfect birthday present. Less than 24 hours before the game, after a series of texts, we were able to snag cheap tickets and assemble a crew of 10 people to go to a thrilling game.
Carleton is about 45 minutes away from both St. Paul and Minneapolis, which made this last-minute excursion possible even on a weekday in a busy week. While life on campus and in Northfield keeps us entertained and our schedules full, my friends and I have made a point to also take advantage of our proximity to the Twin Cities. For example, we went to a concert at the Armory in Minneapolis last Spring, which was an amazing experience (also my first concert!).
The 6:00pm game time fit perfectly into our schedules; we left Northfield around 4:30pm, got to our seats early and grabbed some food/drinks, cheered through an electric 9 innings of playoff baseball, then returned home a little after 10pm. We even got to meet up with a few of our friends who graduated from Carleton a couple of years ago:
I had never been to a playoff game for any professional sport, which made this an extra cool experience for me to go to the game with 9 great friends. Target Field is beautiful, and even though we were in the nosebleeds, our seats had a great view of the field. The atmosphere, as expected, was incredible:
All in all, a pretty successful celebration of Tex’s birthday, and a great, spontaneous way for us to have a good time!
It seems like just yesterday that Kai (he/him) first arrived at Carleton. Yet now, he is a Senior Political Science & Psychology major and Public Policy minor. Kai loves Carleton’s friendly campus culture, spending much of his time hanging out at Sayles, taking walks around the Lakes or in the Arb, volunteering for Project Friendship, and pitching/playing infield for the baseball team.
