Life at Carleton: Classes

April is the month where most people make their college decisions. Last week I talked about things to consider when choosing a college; this week, I would like to focus a little more on Carleton, mentioning what life is like as a student.
If I had to choose a word to describe the typical Carleton student, hardworking would be one of the first words that comes to mind. Classes run from roughly 8:30 am to 4:30 pm daily, and are not too long — most people take classes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, for an hour and ten minutes Monday and Wednesday, and an hour on Fridays (to make space for convocation!). Classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays are a little longer — they are an hour and forty-five minutes — but they only meet twice a week. We take three classes a term (you can take more if you want!) and there are definitely extra courses you can take for less credit. As a result of our schedule, we don’t spend too much time in class per week, but students spend large amounts of time on academics outside of class.
There is still a lot of interaction to be had with others, from attending office hours with your professor to going to prefect sessions (led by a student majoring in the topic), and from personally meeting with professors to spending hours in the library working alone, with groups, or with a tutor.
Alvin is a west coast kid at heart (coming from San Jose, California), but is excited to start many adventures here in Minnesota. He plays for the soccer team here at Carleton and loves exercise. If he’s not on the soccer field, in the gym, or out on a bike ride during his free time, he can be found in one of the lounges playing Exploding Kittens, or in the music building playing piano. He is a potential economics major with an interest in computer science and mathematics.
