Into the Arb!

Carleton’s Cowling Arboretum is a natural resource that I learned to love about campus this year. I went on long walks with friends and practiced my photography within the woods. With over 800 acres of land and 15 miles of hiking trails, there’s lots to do!

The Arb is really, really beautiful.

I saw someone hang a hammock right by this stream. I wish I’d thought of that!

One of the things I love the most about Minnesota is the passing of four distinct seasons. The Arb showcases that beauty constantly. I always look forward to seeing the leaves change colors in the fall. During the spring, one of my professors always shared photos of the flowers he’d seen while walking along one of the paths in the Arb.

I love these beautiful flowers!

I prefer the lakes myself. We have two lakes on campus as well as a few streams running through the woods. These lakes were used in a recent student theater production by one of my friends. The Carleton Association for Nature and Outdoor Enthusiasts (CANOE), one of the largest campus organizations, organizes kayaking on the lakes.

Personally, though, I relish sitting on the shore admiring the reflection of the sky.

In every season, there are lots of things you can do in the Arb.

There are trails for hiking year round, and in the winter (despite the cold), Nordic Skiing is particularly popular. Some classes use the Arb as well, from Archaeology to Cinema and Media Studies to Geology. There are also lots of opportunities to volunteer if you’d like. The Arb even has a few student employment positions!

McKenna is a Russian and Psychology double major who is thrilled to be spending the summer in Minnesota! On campus, she’s often designing lights for a student performance, speaking Russian in Parish house, or grabbing a meal with friends. She’s also a proud member of the Carleton Equestrian Team. Off campus, she participates in the CLS Program and is a tutor with Paper AirplanesMeet the other Bloggers!
