How to Spend Midterm Break

Halfway through every term, Carleton students get an extended weekend, called midterm break. Although it doesn’t sound like a lot, having one extra day to relax and spread work out over is really nice. But it also means you have more time to explore Carleton and Northfield! Here are just some of the things I did over my midterm break this term.

Midwinter Ball

On midterm break of winter term, Carleton always hosts a dance for the students. It’s really fun to get dressed up with friends and dance! There are usually three different rooms, so whether you’re a fan of salsa, pop or classical music, you can always find something to dance to.

Taking photos before is a must! (Another blogger cross-over event!!)

We also had to match our nail polish (for the look of course)

Rehearsal

As a theater major, I still do have rehearsal over midwinter break. But it was actually nice to have a part of my routine stay the same, even on a day where I didn’t have class. Plus, I’m in a show with all my friends right now, so rehearsal doesn’t feel like a chore.

Reconnecting with friends

This weekend, one of my friends who is off campus this term came back to say hi (and do my makeup for midwinter ball, which I eternally appreciate). Lots of students who live close to campus go home for midterm break, while others visit campus. It’s always fun to see old friends that you might not have seen for many months.

Since Gabby went abroad over the summer, she took this term off (but I was very happy she was back on campus for two days)

Thrifting

As part of the midwinter ball experience, I went thrifting to help some people find outfits. There are multiple different vintage/thrift stores in Northfield, though I don’t visit them often enough. I was happy to be dragged along on someone else’s shopping spree.

As you can see, even one three-day weekend can lead to a lot of different adventures (and catching up on sleep). It’s a nice reset before relaunching into the second half of the term and even when a majority of my classes are on Tuesday/Thursday, it’s still a much needed break!

Kate (she/her) is a junior History and Theater double major from the Bay Area, California. She loves Carleton’s artsy community, and is involved in the Vocal Studies Program and occasionally the Experimental Theater Board when her fight choreography skills are in high demand. Kate’s favorite places on campus are the practice rooms, either in Myers or the Weitz, where she can sing or play the ukulele. She loves the campus during all the seasons but thinks nothing could compare to the beautiful colors of Northfield in the fall. When not in class, you can find Kate either petting the nearest cat or forcing her friends to watch bad movies in a study room.
