How I’ve Been “Wasting My Time”

Coming to college, I anticipated that I wouldn’t have as much free time as I did in high school. I worried there wouldn’t be enough time for the things I love, like reading for fun or watching movies. As I adapt to college life, however, I have learned the importance of incorporating all these little “fruitless” endeavors into my routine. As John Lenon famously said, all “time you enjoyed wasting was not wasted.” So, here are some of the ways I’ve been wasting mine.
Doodling
Thanks to my Project Friendship mentee, Zoe, I have been drawing and coloring A LOT more than usual. Because she enjoys doing artsy activities, we usually spend our time together in the Libe coloring or drawing together. Now, whenever I need a study break, I catch myself mindlessly doodling something on the next available piece of paper. I am not very good at it, but it takes my mind off academics for a little while.

Cartoons!
It was not an arbitrary decision to put in my bio for this blog that I love watching cartoons. Animation is easily my favorite media style. It’s a sort of comfort place I know I can always return to when I need to. Because of that, I have been making room to watch a lot more animation over the past months.

Over spring break I took advantage of my free Amazon Prime account and sort of binge-watched Invincible. Don’t let the fact that it is animated fool you, for this is an adult adaptation of the comic of the same name. I thought it was a fantastic season, and I would highly recommend it if you are at all interested in a subversion of the superhero genre.
If this isn’t for you, I recommend streaming The Owl House. They have been releasing a new episode weekly and it makes for a great start to my Saturday mornings. I cannot wait to see how they conclude the season in a few weeks!
Wandering Around
With spring comes the ideal weather to walk around campus and Northfield aimlessly. I love taking in the beautiful increasingly green sights, and capturing lots of pretty pictures!

I have enjoyed wandering around campus as it comes back to life. People are repopulating the Bald Spot with hammocks, CANOE-sponsored slack lining, improvised picnics, and outdoor study sessions. Witnessing the revitalization of campus life has been, for me, an incredible and welcome morale boost.

As a freshman, she can’t wait to introduce her peers to her native Guatemalan culture, put in practice her newly acquired ASL skills, and play in the snow for the first time. In her free time, Fátima can be found watching cartoons, poorly playing the ukulele, or desperately missing her dog, Cosmo. Meet the other bloggers!
