When I was first admitted to Carleton, I had a gulp moment.

“What on earth is homework like at college!?” ran through my head.

You may be wondering something similar. I am going to break my (humanities heavy) course load down for y’all. Perhaps this will be useful for people out there like me, who like to have a sense of what they’re getting themselves into!

Term 1: Course Overview

A&I: The Ethics of Being A Family

This A&I course was reading heavy. We were expected to annotate 1-3 chapters of material per class! Then, we showed up for our sessions and discussed the material. The course also is designed to offer students a baseline introduction to college reading and writing. We wrote 1 short paper (2 pages) and then 2 *longer* papers (5 pages each). Aside from these three writing assignments, there were no other short answer responses or homework assignments. You pretty much just needed to read the material, show up to class to discuss & learn and write some wild philosophy papers!

Requirements Met: Argument and Inquiry Course

SOAN 151: Global Minnesota: An Anthropology of Human Movement and Borders

This course was reading-heavy! But the content was so good, so I couldn’t complain. We read about 40-80 pages of reading material per class period (with a few short films here and there). Similar to my A&I, we were just expected to come to class having done the readings, ready to discuss in small groups. Along with the class periods, we wrote 7 critical responses to readings throughout the 10-week course. On top of that, we wrote 1 midterm paper (4-5 pages) and 1 final paper (4-5 pages).

THEA 115: Principles of Design: Costume and Set Designs in Theater

There were lots of art projects! We would do readings and watch lectures, show up to class and practice an art skill (mostly painting and drawing techniques). Along with this, every week we had 1 larger design assignment (paintings, drawings, slideshows, art analysis, research projects), etc… We also had several analytical essays (2-3) that examined a concept, costume design, set design, and script. The final project was a group presentation and essay, where we proposed our designs for a play.

Term 2: Course Overview

THEA 270: Art and (Un)Freedom

This was my favorite class! We actually built the syllabus together (soo cool). We read about 15-page readings or watched films before coming to class. We were asked to give 1 reflection per class period, verbally or visually. This course was focused on art, so we made pieces of art relating to the content and then came to class. Other than that, there were 2 final projects: one artistic representation of our takeaways and one long-form reflection on our growth throughout the class.

Requirements Met: Language Track

AFST 230: Black Diaspora: Politics of Place

Similar to the SOAN class from Fall Term, this course was reading-heavy and discussion-based. We were expected to engage with the readings (about 2-3 per class, roughly 30-60 pages each) and show up to class with ideas. There were 4 reading/film responses throughout the course and two papers (4-5 pages each).

Term 3: Course Overview

PYSC 110: Principles of Psychology 

This class is based on readings with course concepts, lectures, quizzes, and exams. In addition to those aspects, there are two writing assignments, between (4-5 pages each). This class is my first STEM class (as you can see), and I wasn’t used to the format of quizzes after each reading. There are three exams for the course which focus on the information of the unit!

AMST 110: Introduction to American Studies 

You may be noticing a theme here… But we pretty much read long essays, poems, short stories, and watch films then come to class and discuss. Along with this, we will write 1 short response paper (2 pages) and two longer analytical/critical essays (5-6 pages each), a group project, and a final paper!

Requirements Met: Writing Rich 2, Intercultural Domestic Studies and Humanistic Inquiry
