It is the end of fall term! My first term at college went by so fast. I still can’t believe I’ll be back home in Japan this time next week. Since I won’t be back on campus until next year, I decided to share what I will miss, as well as what I won’t miss about Carleton during winter break.

I will miss…

  1. My friends: As an introverted freshman, one of my largest worries before coming to college was making new friends. Now, I’m worried about missing my friends I’ve made because I won’t be able to see them for more than a month. From studying at the libe (library) to singing along to High School Musical together, if it weren’t for my friends, I don’t think I could’ve survived this term. When winter term begins, there’s going to be a lot of catching up to do.
  2. My floormates: One thing I regret most about this term is that I didn’t get to spend much time with the people on my floor. This is mostly my fault, because I was usually too tired to attend floor dinners or Sunday study breaks. When most of the floor gatherings happened, I was mostly in my own room taking a nap or panicking over an exam or an assignment I left untouched. Next term, I am determined not to make any excuses of being busy or tired and spend more time with them.
  3. Muffins: One of my favorite food in the dining hall are the muffins. On rare days when I succeed in waking up early, I treat myself with a muffin before class. I don’t have a definite favorite, and I change the flavors depending on my mood, but some of my top choices are the double chocolate muffins, blueberry streusel muffins, and the granola muffins, which I get a bit too excited about when I see them because they are pretty rare.
  4. Ice Cream: I’ve already showed my love for ice cream in my previous posts. Especially my love for the large scoop of ice cream at Hogan Brothers. Despite the cold, I still crave it, and I am starting to miss it already. My birthday is on January, so when winter term starts and my birthday comes, I plan to celebrate with ice cream instead of cake. (or maybe ice cream And cake!)

I won’t miss…

  1. The cold: I won’t miss having to wear layers and layers of clothes just to walk to dinner. I certainly won’t miss having to wear three layers of blankets or feeling like my fingers are going to fall off when I forget to wear my gloves. Some people have told me that I would get used to the cold, but I’m starting to think that four years aren’t enough for me to get used to the Minnesota weather.
  2. Being lost: Going back to my earlier posts, I got lost on campus a lot of times during my first couple of weeks here. I want to say that I’ve mastered navigating around campus after 10 weeks, but unfortunately, I haven’t. This week I tried to take a short cut to class but ended up in a different road that I had never been to. I was almost late to class, but I was able to explore a new part of campus and feel like I’m in New Student Week again.

All my classes have ended, so I only have to survive through the final exams to go home and rest. I’m already excited for next term and all the new things that I will encounter.

Goodbye, Fall Term 2017!

An is a freshman from Japan who is thankful that Minneapolis has a direct flight from Tokyo. She loves animals, both stuffed and alive, and one of the hardest parts of packing for college for her was choosing which plushie to bring to Carleton or, sadly, leave at home. She is currently undecided about her major and is excited to explore new subjects.
