Alvin talks about his summer in California and his return to campus.

After a long summer break, we are all finally back on campus, thus my blogging privileges have resumed! I thought I’d use my blog this week to talk about what I’ve been up to and how my term is shaping up.

I spent the summer back in sunny California, interning at a home security startup in Santa Clara. It was a lot of fun and I certainly learned a lot throughout my 8 or so weeks there. Aside from work, I spent a lot of time playing soccer, as well as invaluable time with family and friends. I visited Yosemite in August, which was a wonderful experience.

While my time in California was great, I was definitely looking forward to returning to campus and I flew back to Northfield in the middle of August for our soccer preseason. Practices were tiring but a lot of fun, and we had a lot of free time during the day for team bonding and exploring local areas. Four weeks quickly passed and the school year began.

Although it still feels a little strange having so many students back on campus, it has been great to see so many familiar faces along with the new students. With so much free time during preseason, it has also been good to start classes once again. This term, I’m taking Programming Languages, Introduction to Astronomy, and Chinese Literacy. As usual, all of my professors are great, and I’m finding the course material to be extremely interesting.

That’s all for now, but I am sure I’ll have lots more to say next week! In the meantime, I will be studying Scheme, learning about astronomical patterns, memorizing my Chinese vocabulary words, and playing more soccer.

Alvin is a west coast kid at heart (coming from San Jose, California), but is loving his time in Minnesota. He plays for the soccer team here at Carleton and loves exercise. If he’s not on the soccer field, in the gym, or out on a bike ride during his free time, he can be found in one of the lounges playing Exploding Kittens, or in the music building playing piano. He is a Computer Science major with an interest in Economics and Statistics. Meet the other bloggers!
