It’s been three years since I’ve started at Carleton but still I’m sometimes surprised by the sheer amount of work I have the last few weeks of each term.  Weeks 9 and 10 of each term tend to be…very busy. For this term, here’s the rundown of all the assignments I have due for my five classes in the next week:

  • JAPN 206 Japanese in Cultural Context – 2-page essay, 5-minute presentation, oral exam, final exam
  • LING 130 Sociolinguistics of Semitic Languages – 10-minute presentation, 10-page final paper
  • LING 340 Topics in Semantics – 15-minute presentation, 10-page final paper
  • LING 399 Senior Thesis – 10-minute presentation, 5-page final paper consisting of a research plan and annotated bibliography for my comps next term
  • MUSC 182J Chinese Musical Instruments (Juried) – graded guzheng performance

Yeah, looking back at this I’m like “yikes!” but it’s totally doable. I remember the days as a first term freshman feeling apprehensive about a 2-page paper due in three weeks. You just get used to it and the 2-page paper you wrote as a freshman that took you a week to figure out might only take you a day as an upperclassman.

For a linguistics major like myself, I typically only have final presentations and research papers, but for the occasional term I take a stats or CS class, I’ll usually have a final coding project or exam. But, no matter what, I’ve had to do a ton of writing, but no complaints because it’s really been helpful and, again, I was able to acclimate to the amount of writing projects I’ve had at Carleton.

Chase is a junior linguistics major and is more than glad to exchange the year-round California heat for some Minnesota seasonality. In his free time, he enjoys learning and teaching urban dance choreography, playing guzheng, and cycling around Northfield. When Chase doesn’t have free time, which is often, he’ll be in the libe or Sayles with a cup (or cups) of chai tea in hand.
