Hey everyone, I’m back!

My winter break was quite an adventure. It started off hectic but then fun, and then honestly kind of rough. I began with a quick trip to see my friends at UChicago, which was great, but then my beloved dog, Scooter, died a day before I got home. Kind of a worst fears coming true kind of thing. He was thirteen, though, and happy, and lived what appeared to be a wonderful life. I still miss him, but thinking about him brings more happy than sad by now, which I guess means progress.

Love you forever, old man.

Once I got home to California things slowed down significantly. I got up on sleep, got up with friends, and spent time with family. I almost took a road trip down to San Diego, but now that’s a summer plan. Still, it was really good to see everyone. And because of our recent loss, we got a puppy! Her name is Ellie and she’s a five-month-old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd/Labrador mix. I love her so so much, and I already miss her, along with all the other pets I have back at home.

Welcome to the family, baby girl. Love you forever too!

Now that I’m back, I’m mainly just excited to get started with classes. This term I’m taking the next portion of Elementary French, and I’m happy to say I got into a section with a friend from my previous French class. I’m also taking Astrophysical Systems: Mechanics and Relativity (& Lab), which looks absolutely awesome and will be my first official class in one of my likely majors. Lastly, I’m taking Memory and Politics, and I guess it counts as my “random” class this term. The description for the class was intriguing, it included readings from philosophers I’d been meaning to get to, and it’s taught by a professor I’ve heard great things about. All in all, it’s looking like this will be an exciting and challenging term!

Lucas is in his freshman year at Carleton, bringing with him a passion for all things nerdy and a talent for overthinking and awkwardness (and self-deprecation). He hails from Pasadena, California, and yes, he realizes it gets cold out here. Currently wildly undecided, he can see himself attempting a Physics and Cinema and Media Studies double major, although Chemistry, Economics, and Computer Science (among many other subjects) have been tempting him as well. He misses his bearded dragon.
