The Campus in the Spring
As the weather starts to get warmer, there are about a million different things always going on at Carleton. Every evening, you can see students walking from place-to-place and going on the most random (and fun!) side quests. Here are a few of the things on campus that I’ve taken advantage of as the weather has gotten warmer.
CAMS Filming
A lot of students in CAMS classes shoot short films for their final assignments. Although I’ve never taken a CAMS class, I’ve always wanted to see what it was like to work on a film set. Luckily, someone I was in the school musical with emailed and asked if I wanted to act in their film. I jumped at the opportunity to try something new. It only took about 4.5 hours of my life total (including reshoots) and I got a free soda out of it! This spring, I know there were at least seven short films that were looking for student actors.
Sproncert
Okay so maybe this one isn’t so random, but since it’s my favorite Carleton tradition, I had to mention it. For those who don’t know, Sproncert is our annual concert where the student activities organization brings a bunch of local bands and DJ’s to campus. It feels like our own music festival. It was such a gorgeous day this year, and I always love to get dressed up, lay on a blanket and listen to some great live music. Plus, everyone goes, so you can catch up with old friends!
Mutual Aid Art Fair and Empty Bowls
I’ve always loved that Carleton students are artsy, but I’ve never gotten the opportunity to actually buy any artwork from anyone. Both the art fair and empty bowls are great Carleton traditions where people sell their art for a good cause. Empty Bowls specifically serves soup and raises money for the local food shelf. Both of these events are great ways to give back while also supporting Carleton artists!
Working Outside
One of my favorite things about spring is seeing campus come alive as the weather gets warmer. People come out of their rooms in the evening and do work outside on the Bald Spot. Although this might not seem like an official activity, so many Carleton students do it, it starts to feel like a requirement. As someone who usually works in solitude in my room, connecting with other people and nature at the same time is a beautiful thing!
In the spring, you have to be looking at the posters everywhere because if you blink you might miss something! There are so many things going on every single day that even as a junior, I’ve attended more new events this spring than I have in any other term. So even if you aren’t an actor or your seasonal allergies prevent you from working outside, know that there are millions of other things in the spring. You won’t be able to do everything, but even one small thing a week can brighten your term up!
Kate (she/her) is a junior History and Theater double major from the Bay Area, California. She loves Carleton’s artsy community, and is involved in the Vocal Studies Program and occasionally the Experimental Theater Board when her fight choreography skills are in high demand. Kate’s favorite places on campus are the practice rooms, either in Myers or the Weitz, where she can sing or play the ukulele. She loves the campus during all the seasons but thinks nothing could compare to the beautiful colors of Northfield in the fall. When not in class, you can find Kate either petting the nearest cat or forcing her friends to watch bad movies in a study room.
