There are a lot of bugs on-campus. Many of which, I have pictures of. Technically, I am very scared of bugs, especially the buzzing kind. Here are some of the bug pictures I have taken over the years.
Grasshopper
Grasshoppers go hop! hop! hop! You can often find them on sidewalks around campus. Hop, hop, hopping.

Moth
Moths are my favorite bugs. I love that they fly around. This moth is a huge fan of moscato!

Caterpillars
I love caterpillars because of how many legs they have. In Biology 125, we studied Tobacco Hornworms (Manduca sexta). I often see caterpillars on sidewalks around campus.

Dragonfly
Dragonflies love the Lyman Lakes, the manufactured lakes here on campus.

Wasp
I am TERRIFIED of wasps. During my sophomore year, there was a hole in my window screen and wasps would enter into the window. One day, I made the mistake of leaving my window open and a wasp flew into my room. Luckily my housemate was much braver than me and took care of it (trapped it in a cup and released it).

Ladybug
I am ALSO terrified of ladybugs. When they fly, their wings buzz kind of loud and it makes me think there is a wasp. Also, Asian Ladybugs are invasive and BITE. They’re not actually harmful, but it is unpleasant.

Ant
There are, of course, many ants on campus. However, when I saw this one, I was flabbergasted. And you can see why. It is HUGE.

Spider
I love spiders when they are outside. However, I have good reason to believe that a spider bit my toe when I was living in Burton because it randomly became swollen. No idea though.

There are many bugs on campus. Not mentioned here are mosquitoes because it is hard to take pictures of them. (Plus, I try to avoid them anyway). Although they can be scary, I am glad we are so close to nature that we see bugs consistently (and mostly outside).
Ronnie (they/she/he) is a senior Biology major from Oak Park, IL. Outside of blogging, she is also an Admissions tour guide and a Student Ambassador for Alumni Relations. You can usually find them in Cowling Gymnasium with the Ballroom Dance Team, practicing for the next competition or chatting with teammates. They also have very strong opinions about food on campus (especially LDC eggs and Burton fried tofu). She is also the commodore of Carleton’s sailing club and a DJ for KRLX, the student run radio station.
