Ballroom Dancing 101

Growing up, I knew all Disney princesses had one thing in common: ballroom dancing. From a young age, ballroom dancing held an aurora of magic and elegance in my eyes. After choosing Carleton, ballroom dancing was one of the classes I couldn’t wait to take! Although in Disney movies the characters had western dance styles, at Carleton, I have been learning dances ranging from salsa to swing.

How do dance classes work ?

Every student is required to take four terms of PE credit courses at Carleton. Fortunately, there are a lot of options to choose from, like ballroom dancing! Initially, I was a little nervous because I did not have a lot of experience, but surprisingly, there were classes for all levels. For the beginner’s level, classes are held two days a week for an hour and 30 minutes; however, when you are having fun, time goes by so fast! Now that I have been taking classes for a couple of weeks, I have mastered the basics of tango, cha-cha, rumba, and waltz!

Dance classes are offered on zoom and in person, with social distancing restrictions. Since I did not have much space in my room, I had chosen to attend the in-person classes. To adhere to the COIVD-19 regulations, everyone verifies their negative test results before entering the gym.

What is my Favorite part?

In these classes, I am not only learning about the physical movements of dances but also their cultural significance! This class has also opened doors for me to meet others who share a love for dance and music. Although this club is a PE credit class, the atmosphere is so interactive and fun that you will forget you are actually working out!
