A Day in the Life During Winter Break at Carleton

The furthest thing from everyone’s mind right now is winter. But winter and winter break are an important part of the Carleton experience!

There are a lot of options for Winter Break, but for me I always stay on campus to play basketball!

I’m gonna recount what a typical day looks like for some of us who spend our winter break here on campus!

Brunch

My team usually eats a delicious meal together for breakfast! It’s a great way to start the day, with friends and food! We all definitely need to fuel up before practice.

Basketball

Most of my winter break is filled with basketball! West Gym is like my home away from home away from home.

Practice is usually 2-3 hours of my day, not including any lift or pre/post-practice work. It’s nice to get in the gym for a bit and then get out.

This time of year also means lots of games, so sometimes we are just prepping, recovering or playing a game.

Snow!

Winter break is always when we get one of our first big snows! I love how campus looks with the freshly fallen snow and the peaceful atmosphere during that first snowfall.

Usually after practice, when I have a few free minutes, I love to take walks through campus and look around at all the beautiful nature and architecture.

I always try my best not to slip and fall, but our grounds crew is great at clearing snow so it’s usually pretty safe out there!

Friends

After a long day, my team usually meets up to make a group dinner. Sometimes we do where different class years makes a dinner for everyone else. My class always makes tomato soup and grilled cheese.

After a long day, I usually get to retreat to my room and relax. I try to find time to work on internship applications or reading. Winter break is a great time to catch up on all the things you miss during the school year!

If Margie (she/they) were a place at Carleton, they would be Sayles, Carleton’s bustling student center! Margie is a varsity Basketball player, is a DJ for KRLX, Carleton’s student-run radio station, and occasionally participates in Carleton Association of Nature and Outdoor Enthusiasts (CANOE). In her free time, Margie works at a food truck!
