A Chill(y) Day in the Life

Emma takes us along with her on a typical Carleton Wednesday.
It’s the end of week four here in Northfield, and even though the temperature is in the negatives, the workload sure is heating up! This time of term is when most Carls start to prep for midterms, and in winter term this process involves lots of staying inside and warm.
Come along with me for a Wednesday in my life!
My Morning

My day started with a 7:45 alarm and a quick walk from my dorm to LDC for breakfast! I didn’t have enough time to eat in the dining hall, so I took advantage of LDC’s fill-your-own-cup policy to grab a cup of tea to take to work. They even had my favorite pastry today– the infamous chocolate muffins!
My Campus Job

The first official task of my day was work! I’m a student worker at Carleton’s Registrar’s Office, so I spent my morning scanning and processing a bunch of transcripts from the class of 2021. My coworkers are really fantastic, and I love starting my mornings talking to them about their weekends and work projects. We just got a new color mode on our scanner, so I made this unbelievably incredible sign last week to let the other student workers know.
Class time!

I then went straight from work to class. I’m currently taking this art history class about the earliest art: today’s topic was funerary practices in Egypt. We talked about how the architecture of tombs was designed to reflect the natural world. Why can’t a lotus stem be part of a column outside of a pharaoh’s tomb?

My next class was Spanish 204! Right now we’re reading the graphic novel Historias del barrio by Gabi Beltrán and practicing narration in the past. It’s great because the novel touches on deep themes about what it means to be human, so the grammar exercises also involve talking about our beliefs and values.
Back at Home

Then I scurried back to my room for a couple hours. I had a zoom meeting with a professor who’s currently on sabbatical to go over a research proposal for a fellowship I’ve been working on. The meeting went super well and he had some fantastic feedback on the proposal. Then I settled into this spot to draw my notebook and peppermint tea for an assignment for my observational drawing class!
Brave the Cold… Again

A quick scurry across campus on the way to Burton for dinner! Look at all that snow! Dinner was pretty good last night. I took full advantage of the new taco station and had a burrito bowl.
Study Time

After dinner, we all decided to take some time to get a little work done in Sayles campus center. Studying together is one of the best ways to socialize at Carleton, if you can manage to find the correct balance between talking and getting work done. Plus, check out the finished drawing of the cup from earlier!
Work Hard, Play Hard

After we had decided that a satisfactory amount of work had been done, we made the trek downtown to see a show by Carleton’s premier latin jazz band, Caballeros Sin Nombre. A bunch of my friends are in the band, so it was great to see them play!
Goodnight!

The day ended shortly thereafter with just enough time to read before bed.
Overall, this was a pretty perfect Carleton day! Just enough time to get everything done and spend plenty of time with friends!
Emma (she/her/hers) is a sophomore prospective Art History major/European Studies minor from Attleboro, Massachusetts. When she’s not in class, you can probably find Emma engrossed in a terribly long conversation in Burton Dining Hall, knitting at a Bald Spot picnic table, or perusing the museum studies stacks on third libe. Beyond blogging, she works for the Registrar’s Office, teaches adult tap dance classes downtown, and loves submitting to student publications like babyteeth and No Fidelity. She loves Carleton for the number of opportunities it offers and the close connections she’s formed with professors, not to mention proximity to coffee from Goodbye Blue Monday and early morning walks through the neighborhoods.
