On Carleton’s campus, somewhere within its 955 acres of land, hides a big secret…

a beach volleyball court!

So…where is it?

Located right behind the Libe, we have a slightly secluded beach court that my friends and I make frequent use of in the Fall and Spring terms. The soft sand surrounded by picturesque trees and the lovely Libe windows make for a perfect spot to play a few pickup games after a hard day of classes. If you study in the Libe next to the window, you’ll have a great view of the court during study breaks.

What is Beach Volleyball?

I’m so glad you asked! Beach volleyball is only one of the best outdoor activities. It is pretty similar to indoor volleyball, however, there are some major differences. For one, beach volleyball, sometimes called sand volleyball, is played outdoors on a sand court that is slightly smaller than an indoor court, however, the net used is the same height as indoor (women’s height at 7 ft and 4⅛ in, and men’s height at 7 ft and 11⅝ in). Instead of having 6 people per team, beach only has two. The first team to win two sets wins the game; each set is played to 21 points (you must win by 2). If a third set is necessary, it is played to 15 points, switching sides when a team reaches 8 points.

There are some other more specific rules, but you get the point. While these are official rules of beach volleyball, that in no way means you have to follow them! My friends and I play volleyball in a ton of different ways (and we usually make up rules to go with it), and we just like to have fun.

IM Beach Volleyball

Each spring term we host intramural beach volleyball tournaments! These games are really fun and a great way to enjoy the newly revived outdoors from the long winter. This past spring, we played doubles (2v2) which was an exciting change from the 4v4 in years past.
