Lynn's back at KRLX and playing more tunes than ever!

Folks, what can I say? I’m a gal who other gals want as a radio cohost. It’s a specific personality type, and I’ve got it. An important part of the personality is signing other gals up for radio shows with me. The sense of obligation is the fun part!

Please, though, believe me, I did not have to beg my long-time co-host Calla Slayton (’20) to revamp our usual show this term. You may remember our humble origins—a 4:00 AM slot last spring—but a lot has changed since then!

Oh, but what hasn’t changed is both Calla’s and my need to hold up our right hands in excitement and/or for emphasis regardless of the time and/or situation. Also please note my delicious apple resting on my leg—it’s spring, everyone! Apple season! Honestly that’s a fallacy because every season is apple season for me, an apple lover, but I associate a Carleton spring with riding my bike, wearing sunglasses, biting into an apple. This one was a Pink Lady, my new fave. New since last summer. I used to be a Granny Smith gal.

Calla and I originally planned our show (originally called Rookies) as an hour-long discussion of podcasts. We chose a new one each week (rather, the day before our show) and chatted about the show as a whole or whichever episode we’d just listened to. But as the time has passed (and without Calla in the fall—she was studying abroad), we’ve grown very much outward. Rookies II, last term, was a lot more general in its definition of podcasts. Meaning… we really just talked about media in general, like TV and movies and other pop culture. I think we spent the entirety of our last episode gossiping about Calla’s mother’s love life?

And now, we’ve entered new name territory. We’ve broken away from our Rookie beginnings, and entered a mutual appreciation for one Phoebe Bridgers and especially her song Motion Sickness — we called our show something like Phoebe Bridgers Fan Club. We still spend most of our show talking, but we Love a little Phoebe interlude — she’s got 3 bands, so there’s a lot to choose from. And we’ve been BUSY — which for me, means listening to a LOT of podcasts, but for Calla, means that she’s listening to soft music while she types away on her computer. So our conversation has shifted a lot more towards us! What are we up to? What are our gripes? Will Lynn miss Calla when she graduates this spring? (She will!) We also have big plans for our show promotional material. Although we really should get working on that, we only have 6 ish more weeks wow! Tune in on Fridays from 3-4 (krlx.org).

On the promotional front, my other radio show has PBFC beat. Made this weekend when I became obsessed with the drawing feature on the notes app, our show art is so cute. I mean, if I don’t hear back from that job I applied to this week, I think I could make a living notes-app-sketching people on the street. This is probably not true.

Last term I hosted my own solo show where I played the (mostly sad) tunes I love, but this term, I’m negotiating my content with that of one Sam (from the sketch)! You can catch our disjointed stream of songs (switching from Sufjan Stevens to Diet Cig at a moment’s notice!) on Thursdays from 2-3 (still krlx.org).

I’ll let you know if I pick up anymore spots. Jk, folks, I don’t have time to develop THREE radio personalities. But I will keep you updated on these ones!

xx

Lynn is a senior CAMS major and WGST minor from the desert. She’s super into podcasts, comedy, queerness, and food. You can catch her doing improv with Cujokra or stand up with the Queens of Comedy — or perhaps reading something by Roxane Gay, baking at Dacie Moses, looking at her résumé to remember what else she does, or in the Weitz trying to find her hard drive. Meet the other bloggers!
