Carleton recognizes that students with temporarily disabling conditions that are a result of injury, surgery, or a short-term medical condition may need assistance. Some examples of temporary conditions include:

  • Broken limbs
  • Hand injuries
  • Concussions
  • Follow-up care for medical treatments

Documentation Requirements

Students are asked to provide documentation from an appropriate licensed care provider. Students should contact OAR staff as soon as they need support. Staff will guide them in obtaining supporting documentation as needed.

Potential Accommodations for Temporary Disabilities

Academic accommodations are approved on a case-by-case basis. Examples of some accommodations which may be available for a temporary arm, hand, or upper extremity injury may include:

  • Scribe for exams
  • Note-taking assistance
  • Audio recorder for lectures
  • Extended testing time
  • Computer for essay exams

Students with temporary disabilities may want to meet with the Disabilities Services staff to discuss:

  • Potential classroom and testing accommodations
  • Information on accessible routes and elevator access on campus

The college DOES NOT provide personal care assistance to students. Building-to-building transportation or the transport of books or other personal items are also not provided as accommodations.

Students who have mobility concerns or other conditions impacting their residence life needs may inquire about housing accommodations through OAR. Accommodations can be made when appropriate as space is available.

Equipment Loan

OAR has battery-powered scooters and knee scooters available for short-term loan on a first-come, first-served basis.
